Value is not luck. It is the result of a handful of things you can actually control. Here are ten, in plain order, from the ones with the biggest payoff to the ones that simply close gaps.
- Grow recurring revenue. A dollar that repeats every year is worth far more than a dollar that shows up once. Buyers pay a higher multiple for predictable income.
- Reduce how much the business needs you. Build a team and a system that runs without you in the room. This single move often moves the multiple more than anything else.
- Spread out your customers. Get your largest customer under 15% of revenue if you can. The less any one client can hurt you, the safer the business looks.
- Protect and grow your margins. Higher margins signal pricing power and discipline. They flow straight to the bottom line a buyer is paying for.
- Clean up the financials. Separate personal from business. Make the numbers tie out. Give a buyer nothing to question.
- Lock in your key people. If your best employees might leave when you do, the buyer prices that risk. Retention agreements and clear roles calm that fear.
- Document how the business works. Write down the processes living only in your head. A business that is written down is a business that transfers.
- Diversify suppliers and reduce single points of failure. One vendor, one factory, one system. Each is a risk a buyer will discount for.
- Show a clean growth story. Three years of steady, explainable growth beats one big spike. Buyers pay for a trend they can believe.
- Know your number early. You cannot improve what you have not measured. A valuation tells you which of these levers actually matters most for your business.
One business owner ran this list with two years to spare. He focused on recurring revenue and reducing his own role. By the time he sold, the business looked safer and grew faster, and the price reflected both.
You will not do all ten at once. Pick the two with the biggest payoff for your situation, and start there.
